About me

Peter Kypri also known as Cypriot Smurf has a unique background and upbringing have had a profound influence on his perspective and creative endeavors. Born in London to a Greek Cypriot father and an Italian mother, he grew up in a multicultural household that was steeped in a rich tapestry of traditions, languages, and idiosyncrasies. However, it was at the age of 11 that his life took a significant turn as he moved to Cyprus, a move that would shape his sense of humor and artistic expression.

In addition to his unique upbringing and the cultural influences from his time in Cyprus, Peter Kypri, also known as “Cypriot Smurf,” has taken his creative endeavors across the globe. He has performed his stand-up comedy in three continents, namely Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom & Cyprus. This global exposure has allowed him to further refine his comedic style and share his insights and humor with diverse audiences around the world, adding an international dimension to his already rich tapestry of experiences and inspirations.

Living in Cyprus during his formative years, Kypri found himself immersed in the vibrant and sometimes perplexing world of Cypriot culture. It was during this time that he began to keenly observe the idiosyncrasies and quirks of his new home, which would later become the wellspring of inspiration for his alter-ego, “Souvlaki.”

One of the first things that struck Kypri was the nonchalant attitude of some locals. He couldn’t help but notice how people would patiently wait for a bus that never seemed to arrive on time, if at all. This humorous juxtaposition of punctuality and the Cypriot concept of “island time” left a lasting impression on him, highlighting the laid-back approach to life that often characterizes Mediterranean cultures.

Another source of amusement for Kypri was the twisting of words in an inaccurate and distorted manner, often resulting in comical misunderstandings. The richness of the Greek and Cypriot dialects, blended with occasional Italian influences from his family, created a linguistic playground for him to explore and exploit in his humor. This linguistic tapestry would later infuse his performances and writing with a playful and witty linguistic edge.

Additionally, Kypri couldn’t help but notice the loud and often misunderstood nature of the people around him. The passionate, animated conversations and gestures, while endearing, sometimes led to misinterpretations and unintentional comedy. This miscommunication added yet another layer of complexity to his observations of Cypriot culture.

All of these experiences and observations converged to form the foundation of Peter Kypri’s alter-ego, “Souvlaki.” Souvlaki represents a fusion of cultures, languages, and humor. It’s a persona that captures the essence of Kypri’s upbringing, embodying the quirks and idiosyncrasies he encountered during his time in Cyprus. Through Souvlaki, Kypri channels his unique perspective into his creative work, offering audiences a humorous and insightful glimpse into the colorful world he calls home.
